What is an Allergy?

What is an allergy?
Allergy occurs when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance for example, house dust mite, animal dander, foods, pollens and moulds. Antibodies are produced by your immune system and some can protect you from unwanted invaders which have the ability to make you ill or trigger an infection. If you have an allergy, your immune system produces antibodies which identify a particular substance (allergen) as harmful even though it isn’t. Therefore, when you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system. An allergic reaction can vary with each individual and can range from minor irritation to anaphylaxis- a potentially life-threatening emergency.
